I’ll just repost with Fr. Z’s commentary in red:

By Hilary White, Rome correspondent
Wednesday February 11, 2009

ROME, February 11, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The dissident, leftist movement in the Catholic Church over the last forty years has severely undermined the teaching of the Catholic Church on the moral teachings on life and family, [fantastic!] a prominent US Orthodox rabbi told LifeSiteNews.com. Rabbi Yehuda Levin, the head of a group of 800 Orthodox rabbis in the US and Canada, also dismissed the accusations that the Holy See had not sufficiently distanced itself from the comments made by Bishop Richard Williamson of the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) on the Holocaust.

“I support this move” to reconcile the traditionalist faction in the Church, he said, “because I understand the big picture, which is that the Catholic Church has a problem. There is a strong left wing of the Church that is doing immeasurable harm to the faith.” [Peter was Jewish. Can Rabbi Levin be Pope after Pope Benedict? Maybe 20 years from now?]

Rabbi Levin said that he understands “perfectly” why the reconciliation is vital to the fight against abortion and the homosexualist movement. [The man-centered view of the left detaches morals from reality.]

“I understand that it is very important to fill the pews of the Catholic Church not with cultural Catholics and left-wingers who are helping to destroy the Catholic Church and corrupt the values of the Catholic Church.” This corruption, he said, “has a trickle-down effect to every single religious community in the world.” [What an admission!]

“What’s the Pope doing? He’s trying to bring the traditionalists back in because they have a lot of very important things to contribute the commonweal of Catholicism. [YES YES YES!]

“Now, if in the process, he inadvertently includes someone who is prominent in the traditionalist movement who happens to say very strange things about the Holocaust, is that a reason to throw out the baby with the bathwater and start to condemn Pope Benedict? Absolutely not.”

During a visit to Rome at the end of January, Rabbi Levin told LifeSiteNews.com that he believes the media furore over the lifting of the excommunications of the four bishops of the Society of Saint Pius X is a red herring. He called “ridiculous” the accusations that in doing so Pope Benedict VXI or the Catholic Church are anti-Semitic and described as “very strong” the statements distancing the Holy See and the Pope from Williamson’s comments.

Rabbi Levin was in Rome holding meetings with high level Vatican officials to propose what he called a “new stream of thinking” for the Church’s inter-religious dialogue, one based on commonly held moral teachings, particularly on the right to life and the sanctity of natural marriage.

The most important issue,” he said, is the work the Church is doing “to save babies from abortion, and save children’s minds, and young people’s minds, helping them to know right and wrong on the life and family issues.”

“That’s where ecumenism and inter-religious dialogue has to go.”

Although numbers are difficult to determine, it is estimated that the Society of St. Pius X has over a million followers worldwide. The traditionalist movement in the Catholic Church is noted for doctrinal orthodoxy and enthusiasm not only for old-fashioned devotional practices, but for the Church’s moral teachings and opposition to post-modern secularist sexual mores. [And this is why progressivists will fight their reintegration in the mainstream Church.] Liberals in the Church, particularly in Europe, have bitterly opposed all overtures to the SSPX and other traditionalists, particularly the Pope’s recent permission to revive the traditional Latin Mass. [The TLM is the monster under their bed.]

The Vatican announced in early January that, as part of ongoing efforts to reconcile the breakaway group, the 1988 decree of excommunication against the Society had been rescinded. Later that month, a Swedish television station aired an interview, recorded in November 2008, in which Bishop Richard Williamson, one of the four leaders of the Society, said that he did not believe that six million Jews were killed in the Nazi death camps during World War II.

At that time, the media erupted with protests and accusations that the Catholic Church, and especially Pope Benedict XVI, are anti-Semitic.

Rabbi Levin particularly defended Pope Benedict, saying he is the genius behind the moves of the late Pope John Paul II to reconcile the Church with the Jewish community. [HO HO! The libs aren’t going to like that suggestion! They will attack the Rabbi especially on this point, suggesting that it was all JP II and had nothing to do with Card. Ratzinger… who is German, btw.]

“Anyone who understands and follows Vatican history knows that in the last three decades, one of the moral and intellectual underpinnings of the papacy of Pope John Paul II, was Cardinal Ratzinger.

“And therefore, a lot of the things that Pope John Paul did vis-à-vis the Holocaust, he [Benedict] might have done himself, whether it was visiting Auschwitz or visiting and speaking in the synagogues or asking forgiveness. A lot of this had direct input from Cardinal Ratzinger. Whoever doesn’t understand this doesn’t realise that this man, Pope Benedict XVI, has a decades-long track record of anti-Nazism and sympathy for the Jews.”

We are getting close to Lent. And I suspect there will still be parishes that empty their fonts for the entire season. This year, let’s try to nip this practice in the bud before Lent starts.

The emptying of fonts for all of Lent is a particularly annoying offense because it reduces sacramentals to mere symbols. In my experience, the fonts were filled with sand. You know, the desert thing –all part of a likely unintentional but insidious movement toward demystification. Although holy water is not a Sacrament, it is a source of grace by virtue of its connection to the intercession of the Church and no one should be imposing a fast on it or any other sacramental. If your parish has a history of this practice, politely contact the pastor and ask it to be stopped.

Here is CDW documentation explictly against the practice: http://www.ewtn.com/expert/answers/holy_water_fonts_and_lent.htm

Creative Minority Report notes the dead Pope-Joan-myth dog still wags its tail. Commentor John Hetman notes its resurgence on the heels of Lent. Another commentor, Foxfier, suggested an Anti-Catholic liturgical calander to remind writers what topics to cover. Rough sketch:

Christmas time: “Was Mary a Virgin?” “How many brothers did Jesus have?” “Was Joseph Jesus’ biological father?”

Lent: Pope Joan, some sprinkles of modified Galileo on anniversaries of Darwin.

Easter: “How many children did Jesus have?” “Who really died on the cross?” “The Historical Jesus: did he ever live?”

Ordinary Time : “Inquisition!” “Millions– no BILLIONS– were killed by the Church in the dark ages/as witches/ as Jews/ as heretics!”

There has to be more; can anyone else add?

I’d say that during Christmas time, there is always a “Jesus was probably really born [insert anything other than December 25th]. As a question of fact, it is not that objectionable, but these people just have to rain on the season somehow.

Find your parachute and jump out of the burning public-school plane:

Two Florida high school students on Tuesday sued their school board because they were not allowed to form a club that promotes the tolerance of gays.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida filed the suit Tuesday in federal court on behalf of Yulee High School students Hannah Page, a freshman, and Jacob Brock, a junior.

The New Shock Doctrine

Chomsky wannabe Naomi Klein coined the terms “Shock Doctrine” and “disaster capitalism” to describe when capitalists use societal upheaval to ram through supposedly unpopular economic policies in third-world countries.

Something tells me that we won’t hear cries of “Shock Doctrine!” from her quarter as Obama overheats the rhetoric and tries to ram through his blatant attempt at disaster socialism billed as a stimulus package.

Every now and then I hear the protest that there are indeed pro-lifers in the Democratic party. I usually shoot back that yes there are, and in an election, the DNC will deign to allow the handful of them to be wheeled out on TV on a hand-truck like Hannibal Lecter where they mouth through their steel mask that yes, there are pro-lifers in the party, at which point they are promptly shuffled back to their cells never to be heard from till next election.

Earlier I passed along the story of Bishop Martino’s letter to Senator Casey. It wasn’t hard to tell that the Bishop smelled the stench of the putrid “reduce the need for abortion” marketing ploy.

Lydia McGrew brings to the table lots of knowlege and history of the players on both the Left and the Right. So when she says, “Don’t put that in your mouth, I know exactly where it’s been!” we should listen:

And I would note: So much for “pro-life Democrats.” Anybody remember when Casey was hailed as the true pro-life guy in the Democrat party, the guy we should support to show how non-partisan we were? I remember when he was very young and was interviewed by a Protestant magazine (World magazine) very favorably. One got the impression that he was being mistreated by the pro-life groups who were endorsing Republican candidates and not endorsing him. Then when he got elected, he was asked things about voting with his party on committee chairman nominees and such, and he said he’d vote with his party, that he wouldn’t have a pro-life litmus test on committee chairmanships. That was a danger sign right there. I myself was unhappy about Rick Santorum’s stumping for Arlen Specter (ick), but I hope all the people who voted for Casey and voted out Santorum on the grounds that Casey was “really pro-life” and that only narrow partisanship would make one vote for Santorum are now realizing that they might just have been wrong. It’s even in Scripture (I believe St. Paul is quoting some sort of known proverbial saying): “Bad company corrupts good manners.” Casey has lain down with the pro-death dogs and is getting up with fleas.

P.S. And the evidence mounts as Obama has Kathleen Sebelius as Health and Human Services Secretary high on his list after Daschle crapped out.

P.P.S. But hope remains while company is true. Check out Archbishop Chaput’s dismantling of the “reduce abortions” sham.

Re my post on John Heilemann’s analysis of Barack’s post-coronation woes, many readers seemed to think I implicitly accepted his premise – that there were “five good reasons” why Obama should have enjoyed the world’s longest honeymoon. Not at all. I regard all “five good reasons” as bunk, beginning with the first, “the smoothness of his transition and the superstar-laden lineup he installed”. The former was due to his predecessor’s graciousness and the latter aren’t “superstars” but a Clinton-era boyband reformed in late middle age.

As for Obama’s “skills as a communicator”, I pass. He seems to be like one of those shower units where the merest nudge of the dial turns it from freezing to scalding. One minute, it’s the audacity of hope. Next, we’re on the brink of the abyss.

Heretical House Cleaning

Remember that priest from Australia under threat of being kicked out? Fr. Z passes along the story that it has happened.

I think many in law enforcement will recognize this part:

Vince Knauth, also from St Mary’s leadership group, says it is not right that Father Kennedy is being singled out.

“Statistically this week 4,392 priests and deacons of the United States were subject to allegations of child molestation – that’s between 1950 and 2002,” he said.

Two per cent of those were actually put behind bars.”

I imagine most people recognize it as well. It’s the “Why are you pulling me over for reckless driving when you should be out looking for drug dealers?” defense. It don’t work with the fuzz and it won’t work here.

Mark Steyn:

In The Washington Post, E.J. Dionne tried to break it gently to us:

“No occupant of the White House has ever been able to walk on water.”

Yeah, sure, no previous occupant of the White House has been able to walk on water – your Eisenhowers and Roosevelts, your Chester Arthurs and Grover Clevelands and whatnot. But Barack didn’t run as just another of those squaresville losers. He was gonna heal the planet and lower the oceans. So, even if he couldn’t walk on water, he should at least be able to paddle in it. “He is a community organizer like Jesus was,” said Susan Sarandon, “and now we’re a community, and he can organize us.”

So how’s that going? Jesus took a handful of loaves and two fish and fed 5,000 people. Barack wants to take a trillion pieces of pork and feed it to a handful of Democratic Party interest groups. Jesus picked twelve disciples. Barack seems to have gone more for one of those “Dirty Dozen” caper-movie lineups, where the mission is so perilous and so audacious that only the scuzziest lowlifes recruited from every waterfront dive have any chance of pulling it off.
