Mencius Moldbug turned me on to rummaging through Google Books looking for long lost books full of thoughts unspeakable in this age. That is, liberals on some “techno-hippie” bender went down to dusty stacks, uploaded every book they could find, and ended up unearthing a number of right-wing balrogs to march the earth once again. These include Carlyle, Stedman’s book illustrating the puritan mendacity of the American Revolution, and Count Ernst zu Reventlow’s Vampire of the Continent “smuggled to New York by (I kid you not) U-Boat”.
Today I was reading King James I’s Counterblaste to Tobacco . In addition to being somewhat of a gas bag, the king reminds us how far we’ve come:
shall we, I say, without blushing, abase our seines so farre, as to imitate these beastly Indians, slaves to the Spaniards, refuse to the world, and as yet aliens from the holy Covenant of God ? Why doe we not as well imitate them in walking naked as they doe? in preferring glasses, feathers, and such toyes, to golde and precious stones, as they do ? yea why do we not denie God and adore the Devill, as they doe ?
