Chinese researchers claim to have found a 17 percent increased breast cancer risk among women who have had induced abortions.

Peng Xing and other researchers in the Department of Oncology at the First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University enrolled in their study 1,417 patients diagnosed with breast cancer and 1,587 women without a prior breast cancer.

The researchers’ findings indicated that induced abortion increased a woman’s risk of breast cancer by a “statistically significant” rate of 17 percent.

According to the Coalition on Abortion/Breast Cancer (CABC), U.S. researchers have said that Chinese studies on a link between abortion and breast cancer exclude “report bias” because abortion isn’t stigmatized in China and Chinese women are considered reliable reporters for their abortions.

The CABC said a Turkish study published earlier this year reported a 66 percent increased breast cancer risk among women who have had abortions

My boyfriend was a different story. He was also a Notre Dame senior. When I told him that he was to be a father, he tried to pressure me into having an abortion. Like so many women in similar circumstances, I found out the kind of man the father of my child was at precisely the moment I needed him most. “All that talk about abortion is just dining-room talk,” he said. “When it’s really you in the situation, it’s different. I will drive you to Chicago and pay for a good doctor.”

I tried telling him this was not an option. He said he was pro-choice. I responded by informing him that my choice was life. And I learned, as so many pregnant women have before and since, that life is the one choice that pro-choicers won’t support.

From Red Cardigan comes a story of a New York judge who ordered the lowering of the age to acquire Plan B over-the-counter to 17 and advised removing all restrictions. Red sez:

Parents are responsible for their minor children. If your 17-year-old is truant from school, in states that require compulsory education through the age of 18, you can be arrested along with your erring teen under some circumstances. If your 17-year-old destroys someone’s property you can be held liable. If your 17-year-old drinks alcohol from your house and is later involved in a drunk-driving accident you will likely be sued by the victims and may end up in jail.

But if your 17-year-old is having sex with her thirty-year-old high school basketball coach, the law wants to make sure she can get her Plan B over the counter without having to get a prescription from a doctor, without any parental involvement, and without anyone finding out that her predatory and evil teacher is committing statutory rape.

The report is well worth considering as Sebelius moves toward confirmation as Secretary of Health and Human Services. Part one explains the support Sebelius has given to Tiller, as well as, Planned Parenthood in Kansas. Part two puts a human face on what actually happens at Dr. Tiller’s clinic – something the Catholic Governor has done nothing to restrict, excerpts:

In May 2003, as she would later testify before the Kansas legislature, the then 18 year-old Michelle Berge, now Armesto-Berge, was pressured by her mother to abort her baby in the 26th week of her pregnancy.

“It’s murder and I will not do it,” Michelle protested, but her mother had other plans. Staff at Tiller’s clinic eased those plans along by informing Michelle of a Catholic group that “believed in abortion” and promised baptism for the aborted baby.

Caritas Christi, the health-care agency administered by the Archdiocese of Boston, has joined in a successful bid for a government contract to provide health services for low-income clients. The program requires coverage for abortion, sterilization, and contraception.

Under the Commonwealth Family Health Plan system, abortions will not be performed at the Caritas Christi hospitals. But women who wish to procure abortions will be given a telephone number to call for information on where abortions are performed, and, if necessary, transportation to those sites.

In other words, a neighbor knocks on your door and asks you to shoot his children. You say, “No. I cannot do that. But here is the number of a neighbor down the street who owns a gun and is willing to do it. Heck, let’s take my car.”

There is some Catholic griping about bishops getting stronger on withholding communion from pro-”choice” Catholic politicians. In my various conversations I’ve notice a suspicious avoidance of affirming that abortion is indeed evil, only doing so when squeezed and even then it is only affirmed in the vaguest/minimalist sense. It’s become a smell test for me. To wit: show me someone who affirms the objective moral evil of every deliberate, direct abortion at any stage (no exceptions), and I’ll show you someone with whom we can have an honest conversation about the prudent and proper application of canon law regarding communion. If someone rejects the moral law and Church teaching on abortion, then they are full of baloney when they blast bishops for disciplining. If one is just hunky dory with Sebelius’ abortion record for instance, they got no leg to stand on on the discipline question.

Instead of affirmation, I usually get dodges. Most recently in the form of the “criminalizing abortion” rabbit trail. That is, that because a Catholic politician is not for making abortion illegal, one can’t prove they are for abortion. (This escape hatch by the way was explicitly closed by Evangelium Vitae.)

This avoidance of the question of the moral nature of abortion is like an evil version of St. Thomas More. That silence and evasion is a free pass to maintaining the “Of course no one is for abortion” status quo.
